Experimental musicians and indie-rock favorites Yo La Tengo will perform their instrumental program The Sounds of Science live to the 35mm films of French filmmaker Jean Painlevé in Buffalo this summer. This one-time only event will take place at Shea's on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 8 pm, and is co-presented by Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center and Shea's Performing Arts Center, and co-sponsored by the Buffalo Museum of Science.

This is Yo La Tengo's first visit and performance in Buffalo. On July 13, immediately following their appearance at Shea's, Yo La Tengo will present The Sounds of Science in Prospect Park, Brooklyn during the annual Celebrate Brooklyn festival.

Yo La Tengo's musical interests range from low-key melodic pop songs to all out, roiling feedback extravaganzas and everything in between. Formed in 1984 by duo Ira Kaplan (guitars/vocals/keyboards) and Georgia Hubley (drums/vocals), Yo La Tengo invited James McNew (bass and more) to join in the early 90s. Over the years, the three-person group has collaborated with a plethora of musicians from all over the musical map, including Ray Davies, Jad Fair, Robyn Hitchcock, Neil Innes, William Parker, and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. They have over 18 CD releases to their name on Matador Records and have played all over the world, most recently in Spain and Italy. You can also hear Yo La Tengo's work on the scores of recent indie films Game 6 and Junebug.

Originally debuted in 2001 at the San Francisco Film Festival, The Sounds of Science program includes eight short 35mm films by French experimental and documentary filmmaker Jean Painlevé. Their individual titles give a hint as to their content: The Sea Horse; Shrimp Stories; The Love Life of the Octopus; How Some Jellyfish Are Born; Liquid Crystals; Sea Urchins; Acera or The Witches' Dance; and Hyas and Stenorynchus. These exquisite and rarely seen films offer windows onto the undersea exploits of various inhabitants, giving the group a chance to musically explore the beautiful and often surprising images.

A poetic pioneer of science films, Jean Painlevé (1902-1989) captured a twilight realm of vampire bats, seahorse, octopi, and liquid crystals. Painlevé made more than 200 films in collaboration with his life-partner, Genevieve Hamon—most of them in bug-eyed wonderment at the curiosities of natural history.

In 2001, Yo La Tengo released The Sounds of the Sounds of Science, a 78 minute CD of the score they arranged specifically for these eight, rarely seen film gems.

This special event marks the first-time collaboration of local organizations Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Shea's Performing Arts Center, and the Buffalo Museum of Science.
