Jazz Noir 2: Shadows

(John Cassavetes, 1959)

Jazz Noir 2: 1955–1966

Seven more classic films of the '50s & '60s (some rarely seen, all by great directors) with classic jazz scores composed by and featuring jazz musicians—real and fictional—on screen, off screen, and (in most cases) both.

Curated by Ed Cardoni
Musical team: Charles Mingus (bass) & Shafi Hadi (saxophone).

The credited cast of Shadows features young unknown actors using their own first names (Lelia Goldoni as "Lelia," Anthony Ray as "Tony," Hugh Hurd as "Hugh," Ben Carruthers as "Ben," and Rupert Crosse as "Rupert") and non-actors, but making uncredited cameo appearances are writer/director John Cassavetes, associate producer Seymour Cassel, Bobby Darin (who would star in Too Late Blues a couple of years later), Gena Rowlands (Cassavetes' wife and muse), and writer and broadcaster Jean Shepherd.

"Rowlands was married to John Cassavetes from April 9, 1954, until his death on February 3, 1989. They had three children, all actor-directors: Nick, Alexandra, and Zoe."

"In the opening credits of John Cassavetes' 1959 film Shadows the credits read 'Presented by Jean Shepherd's Night People.'"

Admission prices: $8 general; $6 students/seniors; $5 Hallwalls members.

Licensed for public exhibition through Castle Hill.
