Scholars @ Hallwalls - What is a Project? Scheming and Dreaming in Eighteenth-Century Britain

Select Fridays between September 2014 and May 2015, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center becomes an intellectual salon. Scholars at Hallwalls features eight thought-provoking, award-winning lectures in the humanities, presented in the intellectual and inspiring setting of Hallwalls. Faculty Fellows will present their cutting-edge humanities research in terms accessible to those in other disciplines and outside academia. The events will continue to be social occasions as well, with complimentary hors d'oeuvres...

All lectures are free and open to the public.
My talk explores the eighteenth-century origins of a seemingly-modern idea: projects. It asks what old plans for the future can tell us about the past by examining a series of failed schemes in the fields of agriculture, engineering, and urban planning.

David Alff is an assistant professor of English at SUNY-Buffalo. He is working on book manuscript entitled The Wreckage of Intentions: Projects in British Culture, 1660-1730.
