Martha Malamud Homeward Bound: An Epic Journey
Rutilius Namatianus, a Roman aristocrat, made his political career in Rome and was there during the sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 416 C.E., an event that shook the Roman world to its core. He wrote an epic poem describing his journey back to his estates Southern France after the sack of the city, giving us a rare first-hand account of a chaotic period.
Martha Malamud is a Professor of Classics at UB; her research interests include Roman epic poetry, late antique literature, and classical reception. She edits the interdisciplinary classics journal Arethusa and has served as the Associate Dean for the Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences and as the first Executive Director of the Humanities Institute.
