Buffalo Trace: A Threefold Vibration

Three mid-1980s graduates of UB's Ph.D. program in English—Mary Cappello, James Morrison, & Jean Walton—return to Buffalo to read from their new co-authored memoir about this place in those bygone times, their fellow aspiring scholars (especially one another), the eminent professors they studied with and were inspired by (Ray Federman, Marty Pops, Leslie Fiedler, Norman Holland, Claire Kahane, J.M. Coetzee, Vic Doyno, et al.), the books they read, and the ways in which all of these (place, times, people, and books) shaped their subsequent academic, creative, and personal lives.

Mary Cappello is the author of Night Bloom; Awkward: A Detour (a Los Angeles Times Bestseller); Called Back; Swallow, based on the Chevalier Jackson Foreign Body Collection in Philadelphia's Mütter Museum; and Life Breaks In: A Mood Almanack. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Nonfiction and a 2015 Berlin Prize.

James Morrison is the author of Broken Fever, The Lost Girl, Everyday Ghosts, and several nonfiction books on film. His collection of stories, Said and Done, was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award in 2010. He teaches film and literature at Claremont McKenna College and lives in Los Angeles.

Jean Walton is the author of Fair Sex, Savage Dreams: Race, Psychoanalysis, Sexual Difference, as well as essays on film, modernism, and culture in Critical Inquiry, differences, Discourse, and Hotel Amerika. Mudflat Dreaming: Waterfront Battles and the Squatters who Fought Them in 1970s Vancouver appeared with New Star Books in 2018.

Sarah Sutton
Knots and Pulses

This exhibition by Ithaca-area artist Sarah Sutton will feature a series of monochromatic oil paintings that combine representational imagery with distortions and abstractions that create scenarios in flux. They are essentially landscape paintings, but Sutton's treatment of the landscape toys with its sense of space and the notion of the built vs. the natural environment.

Katie Bell
Abstract Cabinet

Katie Bell’s exhibition is a site-specific installation conceived of as a one-act drama starring anonymous artifacts. Functioning like a theatrical set, the gallery holds static characters that reference the interior architecture of corporate and commercial spaces. Sculptural objects are often fractured or untethered to a contextual structure. Functioning as a whole, the individual artefacts are a nod to players on a stage, held captive in space and time.
