About Marisa Manheim

Marisa Manheim is an interdisciplinary sustainability scientist interested in how bodily encounters with the environment can produce, contest, and reconfigure scientific, regulatory, and everyday knowledge of nature. Trained as an interaction designer, Manheim is committed to collaborative research that explores practical and creative ways of addressing societal problems. As Co-PI of the Urban Soil Co-lab at UB, she is currently undertaking a multi-pronged community-engaged research project on urban soil pollution in Buffalo. Her earlier work examined why households and organizations may hesitate to adopt recycled drinking water and circular sanitation systems, demonstrating how collaborative planning and hands-on experience can support more resilient water and food systems. Her research has been published in Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, Gastronomica, Health and Place, The Journal of the American Water Works Association, with forthcoming articles in Geography and Environment and Sustainability Science.
