NOT A DOOR: A SPECTACLE BY SCOTT B. BILLINGSLEY & JOSEPH NECHVATAL

Presented at:
Hallwalls

Not a Door: A Spectacle by Scott B. Billingsley and Joseph Nechvatal, a performance based on the poetry of St. John of the Cross, Flaubert's TEMPTATION OF ST. ANTHONY, and works of Jean Genet and Georges Bataille. Featuring [actors] Richard Edson and Mark Boone Jr.

Not a Door is hallucinated, or, in Flaubert's words, "a metaphysical and mythological howl." Image after image emerges from the background, each successive impression supplanting the previous one in our consciousness. Not a Door's form isn't linear, as in conventional theater, but closer to the shape and structure of a symphony: assertions of—and variations on—a theme.

Scott B. Billingsley (also known as Scott B.) is, with his collaborator Beth B., the subject of a retrospective being presented by Hallwalls' film program this month [September 1987]. Joseph Nechvatal is a visual artist who lives in NYC and is represented [in 1987] by Brooke Alexander Gallery.
