Although we are celebrating our 50th anniversary all season long (July 12, 2024–June 22, 2025), Wednesday DECEMBER 18, 2024 is our actual 50th birthday, because the very first event under the Hallwalls name, the first event starting the clock on our 50-year Timeline (which now lists over 6,600 events!), took place on DECEMBER 18, 1974, at Buff State:
Hallwalls operated for its first two-and-a-half (literally) eventful years as an unincorporated collective enterprise, almost the entire span of Robert Longo’s and Cindy Sherman’s time in Buffalo before they moved to NYC in 1977, soon followed by Charlie Clough and others (albeit not all, some stayed) from the original group.
ON MAY 26, 1977, with just three board members (Charlie Clough, Robert Longo, & the late Sheldon Berlow), Hallwalls, Inc. was legally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation in NYS.
NOTE: This party will start 6:00–8:00pm in Asbury Hall, then move into the Gallery & adjacent lobby for the last hour.
