Beyond Love Canal: Environmental Justice in Western New York

FREE

When we think about environmental justice in our community, we often think about Lois Gibbs and her incredible victory at Love Canal. This February, we invite you to learn how other communities in Western New York have taken her lessons and gone on to fight environmental justice battles of their own. Our community has a rich history of environmental organizing and we’re bringing the region’s most impressive advocates together to share it. We’ll hear about the campaign against Tonawanda Coke, how West Side residents residents are struggling with asthma, the multi-faceted approach to environmental issues on the East Side and from veterans who worked on the Seneca Babcock and Hickory Woods campaign.

Marla Hlady
Walls

For the past twenty years, objects and sound have played an ongoing and intimate part in the practice of Toronto artist Marla Hlady. Often, a rigorous and seemingly solid sculptural form has been injected with an element of seemingly spontaneous action—which generates its own sound score—as well as pre-recorded sound elements introduced innocuously into fabricated objects. There has often been a duality between the desire to contain and shape sound and motion and the impulse to let it find its own self-actualizing space.
