Hallwalls
A nine-program series of films selected by 22 artists, modeled on a 1979 exhibit called 12 FILMS CHOSEN BY ARTISTS by Barbara Bloom. Artists invited to choose films are John Baldessari, Ericka Beckman, Barbara Bloom, Barbara Broughel, Jennifer Bolande, John Carson, Jim Casebere, Andrea Fraser, Chris Hill, Silvia Kolbowski, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, Daniel Levine, Robert Longo, John Maggiotto, Tim Maul, Peter Nagy, David Robbins, and Lynne Tillman. Essays by Vito Acconci, Barbara Bloom, and Dan Graham will be reprinted from the original 12 FILMS catalog, with cover art by Barbara Bloom.
Film series poster design by Louise Lawler (with Paul Szpakowski), 1986. The poster (21.5 x 25.75 inches) is based on "A Movie Will Be Shown Without The Picture," Lawler's contribution to the accompanying 108-page Hallwalls book publication PICTURE THIS: FILMS CHOSEN BY ARTISTS (1987), edited by Steve Gallagher, pages 63–69. On its front and back, the poster reproduces 5 of the 11 film stills Lawler chose for her visual essay in the book, which includes stills from Giant, Alphaville (also one of two films chosen by Barbara Bloom, pages 9–13), Rear Window, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T., Defense Against Invasion (a 1943 war-propaganda-style pro-vaccination film produced by Disney), Blade Runner, and Pinocchio. In addition, the front of the poster includes (bottom right) a still from Radley Metzger's The Lickerish Quartet (1970), the subject of Dan Graham's contribution to the book, pages 58–62. (Scans by Paul Szpakowski from his copy of the original printed poster, February 2013.)
