Hallwalls
Program #9 features THE WILL ROGERS FOUNDATION AUDIENCE COLLECTION TRAILER (Warner Advertising, USA, 1986), selected by Andrea Fraser; PLANET MARS (NASA, 1979, 29 min.), selected by Jennifer Bolande; and A MOVIE WILL BE SHOWN WITHOUT THE PICTURE (124 min.), selected by Louise Lawler.*
*ARCHIVAL NOTE FROM FILM CURATOR STEVE GALLAGHER (5/12/17): "Per [Louise's] request, we screened The Misfits [1961] by John Huston, but did not turn on the projector bulb. 'A Movie Will Be Shown Without the Picture: The audience sat in the dark and listened to the soundtrack.'"
ARCHIVAL NOTE FROM ED CARDONI (5/22/17): As documented in the ephemera section of WHY PICTURES NOW, Louise Lawler's retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC (April 30–July 30, 2017), Lawler originally presented A Movie Will Be Shown Without the Picture—also using Huston's The Misfits (1961)—in 1979 at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, California, reprising it in NYC on April 2, 1983, 11:00 p.m., in the James Agee Room of the Bleecker Street Cinema, then again at Hallwalls in 1986. Lawler's poster for the 1983 event—including stills from Godard's Contempt, Hitchcock's North By Northwest, and a Roadrunner cartoon—seems to have been a prototype for the design of her poster for Hallwalls' Picture This three years later. Both the 1983 poster and the 1986 poster [misdated 1987] are displayed in the ephemera section of the 2017 MoMA show.
