Presented in person by Ellsworth, Haynes, and Vachon, the founders of Apparatus Productions (a non-profit organization that helps independent filmmakers complete their work), who will visit from New York City to discuss their own work and recent work created through Apparatus. Barry Ellsworth presents: NATURAL HISTORY (1986, 18 min, 16mm, color). Todd Haynes presents ASSASSINS/A FILM CONCERNING RIMBAUD (1986, 43 min, 16mm); and SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY 1987, 43 min, 16mm); (starring a set of Barbie like dolls). Christine Vachon presents A MAN IN YOUR ROOM (1983, 6 min, 16mm); and DAYS ARE NUMBERED (1985, 18 min, 16mm). Also featured the premiere screenings of AMERICAN LUNCH (Julian Dillon); THE PROPOSITUS (working title, Evan Dunsky); and CAUSE AND EFFECT (working title, Susan Delson).

Laylah Ali
Paintings and Drawings


Laylah Ali's work explores power dynamics and interpersonal conflict through compositions that position culturally, racially and sexually ambiguous figures in precarious, loaded, and unexpectedly humorous situations. Ali uses concise—even minimal—imagery that is specific in rendering and intent. While there are narratives in Ali's work, they are stories whose open spaces often give them the atmosphere of fables.
