PROGRAM 1: OPENING NIGHT WITH RECEPTION AND FILMS OF Maria Zmarz Koczanowicz PRESENTED IN PERSON BY THE FILMMAKER. Featuring the films, EVERYONE KNOWS WHO STANDS BEHIND WHOM (1982, 35mm, 6min), THE OFFICE (1987, 35mm, 15min.), TURN ME INTO A LONG SNAKE (1998, 29 min, video) and THE MAJOR OR THE REVOLUTION OF THE ELVES (1989, 30 min, video). Filmmaker and curator Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz was Hallwalls' first CEC ArtsLink Artist in Residence back in 1995.

Laylah Ali
Paintings and Drawings


Laylah Ali's work explores power dynamics and interpersonal conflict through compositions that position culturally, racially and sexually ambiguous figures in precarious, loaded, and unexpectedly humorous situations. Ali uses concise—even minimal—imagery that is specific in rendering and intent. While there are narratives in Ali's work, they are stories whose open spaces often give them the atmosphere of fables.
