THE BIG FILM SERIES

Hallwalls and Squeaky Wheel present filmmaker Lee Krist and his BIG FILM series.

Fiercely committed to "analog" film in a "digital" age, Brooklyn-based Krist hand processes his films and then projects the mesmerizing and delicately wrought results himself on an antique, 35 mm hand cranked movie projector. Demystifying the apparatus of cinema, Krist situates the audience in a circle around him allowing the spectators to observe his every turn. He states that "rather than passively receiving the images from a shadowy projection booth somewhere behind them, the audience is confronted with a simple device from the dawn of cinema, operated by a live person with all the variations of the human machine, so anathema to modern, computerized screenings of "perfection" promulgated by automated corporate cineplexes."
