On the first Friday of every month from February through May, Hallwalls will host a Ways In Between Gender film screening of films and videos by or about folks who identity as transgender or gender-queer.

The winner of numerous awards, including Best Film at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival, TRANSAMERICA is a fictional narrative about Bree, a pre-op transsexual woman, who learns about a son she helped conceive as a man 17 years earlier. Starring Emmy award winner Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), who's garnered a Golden Globe Award for this role.

Paintings and Drawings


Laylah Ali's work explores power dynamics and interpersonal conflict through compositions that position culturally, racially and sexually ambiguous figures in precarious, loaded, and unexpectedly humorous situations. Ali uses concise—even minimal—imagery that is specific in rendering and intent. While there are narratives in Ali's work, they are stories whose open spaces often give them the atmosphere of fables.
