Joan Braderman

The Heretics

Market Arcade Film & Art Center

Hallwalls is pleased to partner with the University at Buffalo's Gender Institute and the International Women's Film Festival to present video artist Joan Braderman who will screen her recent documentary feature, The Heretics (2009, 95min). The documentary, which had its world premiere at the Museuem of Modern Art in 2009, explores the herstory of the Heresies Collective and its self-titled Feminist Publication on Art and Politics (1977-1992).

The hundreds of collective members, now scattered around the globe, are accomplished artists, writers, architects, painters, filmmakers, designers, editors, curators, and teachers. The film incorporates interviews with twenty-four of these women, including a number of Hallwalls alumnae such as Ida Applebroog, Mary Beth Edelson, Su Friedrich, Lucy Lippard, Marty Pottenger, Carolee Schneemann, Cecilia Vicuña and Braderman herself. These women speak intimately about the extraordinary times they shared, challenging the terms of gender and power and re-imagining the lives of generations to come. As it recounts the optimism, purpose and deep commitment of the "second wave" feminists, The Heretics signals the steps that must still be taken today. Written and Directed by Joan Braderman, Produced by Crescent Diamond.
