Beyond/In Western New York 2010: Alternating Currents
Hallwalls Gallery

With Form : Data : Form, his series of electronic self-portraits and landscapes, Jason Bernagozzi approaches video art by employing the medium on its own terms, using the technology as a tool to explore electronic signals rather than as a device to produce digital cinema. Once it is uprooted from the codes and conventions of mass media, video has the potential to reveal information that cannot be predicted. The series represents Bernagozzi's larger practice that involves live systems and signal processing. Performing with modified video cameras, Bernagozzi analyzes and synthesizes the data generated through his gestures with customized computer code. Factors such as light, rhythm and velocity produce a type of variability that shapes the final results. Rather than simply building a tool of abstraction, Bernagozzi's process is analogous to the scientific method, albeit destabilized by the chance operations driving the experiments. The series underscores the persisting tension between formal analysis and an understanding of technology, which continues to influence interpretation.
