02:58 loop / 4272, misc. mushroom spores, 16mm sound film to HDV, 2016
This film experiment begins its life-cycle with the production and collection of the North American edible forest and field dwelling mushrooms. Bellas (Agaricus bisporus); chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius); shaggy manes (Coprinus comatus); lions manes (Hericium erinaceus); and oyster spores (Pleurotus ostreatus) create the emulsion for this 16mm film print.
Contact is slowly severed as the film is played, and a new film is gradually produced in installation. This digital loop freezes 4272 frames in this process.
The soundscape is also derived from the film's emulsion. The spores are played by the projector, creating their own organic music as they run through the machine.
This film presents media and matter as vibrant and spontaneous. It is not only meant to be seen and heard, but inhaled as well.
