The North American New Music Festival, a series of concerts and lectures with composers and performaners from around the world, produced by University at Buffalo Department of Music and co-organized by Hallwalls. Held at various locations throughout Western New York from March 9-19, 1988. Festival begins with a Hallwalls Music Benefit featuring an evening of New Music with: Elliott Carter, Jesse Levine, Paul Schmidt, Joel Chadabe, and Robert Fernandez.

Laylah Ali
Paintings and Drawings


Laylah Ali's work explores power dynamics and interpersonal conflict through compositions that position culturally, racially and sexually ambiguous figures in precarious, loaded, and unexpectedly humorous situations. Ali uses concise—even minimal—imagery that is specific in rendering and intent. While there are narratives in Ali's work, they are stories whose open spaces often give them the atmosphere of fables.
