Null Point 11 featuring the Gyre Ensemble

This concert was originally scheduled for April 27. This is the new date.

Stefanie Mirwald - accordion
Alejandro Oliván - saxophone
Christian Smith - percussion

A 'gyre' is a spiral or a vortex. In our ensemble we find this is an accurate way to describe what happens to sound as it is transferred between body-wind (Saxophone), machine-wind (Accordion) and cloud (percussion). Our purpose as a group is to develop new pieces and concepts for this unfrequented instrumentation. Our goal as humans who each come from different parts of the world—Germany, Spain, United States—is to collaborate and engage with composers and audiences in all of these regions. While we find ourselves in Basel at the time, we like to think of Gyre Ensemble as being transitory and baseless with possibilities stemming in every direction.

Laylah Ali
Paintings and Drawings

Laylah Ali's work explores power dynamics and interpersonal conflict through compositions that position culturally, racially and sexually ambiguous figures in precarious, loaded, and unexpectedly humorous situations. Ali uses concise—even minimal—imagery that is specific in rendering and intent. While there are narratives in Ali's work, they are stories whose open spaces often give them the atmosphere of fables.
