Robbie McCauley

THE BUFFALO PROJECT: TELLING AND RETELLING THE STORIES OF THE RIOT OF 1967

Presented at:
Hallwalls, the Polish Community Center, and the Langston Hughes Institute

A performance written and directed by Robbie McCauley; with Renee Armstrong; Africa Brown; Barry T. Burts; Diane Cammarata-Charlesworth; Laverne Clay; Tom Dooney; Emanuel Fried; Lorna Hill; Catherine Horton; Darleen Hummert; Fortunato Pezzimenti; Gerald Ramsey; and Nelson Brown.

[Robbie McCauley's BUFFALO PROJECT, her original collaborative theater work rooted in our local race history, became the model for a series of similar projects in other cities by the nationally renowned performance artist which, six years later (as of 1996), was still ongoing. Commissioned and produced for Hallwalls by Ron Ehmke, in collaboration with members of Ujima Theatre Co. Performances took place at Hallwalls, Polish Community Center (PCC), and Langston Hughes Institute.]

“Striving to facilitate dialogues on race between local whites and blacks, [McCauley] created the  series in Mississippi, Boston, and Los Angeles produced by The Arts Company. In 1998 her [1990] ‘BUFFALO PROJECT’ [was] highlighted as one of ‘The 51 (or So) Greatest Avant-Garde Moments’ by [Cynthia Carr in] The Village Voice, a roster including work by artists such as Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, and John Cage.”
