Asbury Hall at Babeville
During a prolonged moment of Buffalo and Western New York resurgence, one of the city's oldest contemporary art centers reiterates its connection to place with a 41st anniversary auction of work by artists currently living and working in Western New York. All the participating artists have had some connection with Hallwalls over the years—exhibitions, special events, board membership, drawing rallies—and will illustrate, through 30 live auction and 20 silent auction works, the wide diversity of artistic activity in the region. The auction will include works of painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture from emerging, mid-career, and senior artists.
Appropriately, the event has been titled Regional Flair.
Hallwalls was founded on Buffalo's West Side in late 1974 by a group of young visual artists (some still students at the time) including Diane Bertolo, Charles Clough, Nancy Dwyer, Robert Longo, Cindy Sherman, and Michael Zwack. They began handing work on the walls in the hall between the studios of Clough and Longo and from the beginning, their focus was always inclusive and interdisciplinary, featuring visual artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, and video and performance artists. From its inception, their programmatic eyes perceived work from everywhere as part of their over-arching missions—the international, the national, New York State, and the artists of Western New York.
Tickets are $40 each or 2 for $70, and are available online at www.hallwalls.org, or by calling Hallwalls at 716-854-1694.
The open bar will include signature cocktails, champagne, wine, beer, and a selection of hors d'oeuvres served throughout the event. Doors open at 7 pm for an hour-long for preview of the artworks; the live auction begins promptly at 8 pm. DJ Undersound will be spinning tunes before and after the live auction.
