Why not?
A studio visit should not be understood as some one-in-a-million chance to get a show. A show may derive from it, but it is more often a conversation that itself is part of a larger ongoing conversation we have with many artists. Inform us where you're at with your work. Show us what you make and tell us why. Gripe about the failings of the local/regional art community. Inquire how your work fits into a larger context. Get some direct feedback and critique.
As with any other venue, the number of available opportunities at Hallwalls FAR exceeds the artists we meet and the work we consider. However, this never reduces our interest in studio visits. We never know what we're going to see and we walk in with that attitude. But we may also have ideas about paths you might not have considered for your work, or venues of which you are not aware. Or there may be non-exhibition opportunities for which your work is a good fit, as with our twice-annual Drawing Rally event.
For us, studio visits are part of ongoing field research. We like to hear what artists are doing. As curators, we believe in furthering the dialogue around artwork. As artists, you should want to engage that dialogue. So, sign up.
What do we want to see? Anything that you want to show us. Old work, new work, in-progress work and any combination of those things.
A studio visit can be any scenario that allows you to show and talk about your work. In the past, we have done studio visits at a coffee shop, standing around a dining room table in a basement and in an attic.
Studio visits range between 30 – 45 minutes. We strive to be prompt but please allow a 15-minute window before/after the confirmed time, as we have to factor in travel between visits.
