Shelby A. Baron's drawings are based on observations and lustful daydreams, a practice that began as doodles on any surface available to her growing up in both Buffalo, N.Y. and San Antonio, TX. Exposure to two remarkably different cities in two households resulted in her dependence upon 'hyper-observation' and obsessive drawing to catalog inconstant circumstances, odd characters and uncanny contraptions.
Using ink as a primary medium and stream of consciousness as a primary style, Baron combines a wild array of drawing strategies to realize her ideas—from thick, weighty lines to faint, broken ones; from recognizable forms to a modular aggregate of images piled atop each other to a degree that they disrupt recognition; from drawings that describe characters to those that appear to depict mysterious machines or rampant organic growth.
For her installation at Hallwalls, Baron will be completing several site-specific wall drawings. Shelby Baron’s Big Fat Baby is loosely based on ‘A Shutter of Snow’ by Emily Holmes Coleman and Erika Eiffel, a woman who married the Eiffel Tower in a commitment ceremony in 2007. Baron considers the project so protected and pampered that it could be considered a mild case of Objectophilia or Parental Obsession.
